Background

Much was expected of the Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstorer (Destroyer) but as history shows, the twin engine fighter was ultimately more of a workhorse rather than a star of the Luftwaffe’s front line inventory.

Although the Bf 110 saw success in the early campaigns of World War Two, it was outflown by the RAF in the Battle of Britain and the type suffered significant losses.  The Bf 110 was withdrawn from front line combat but usefully transitioned to other roles, and slogged on as a strike aircraft in other theatres, such as North Africa and the Eastern Front where it was successful in the fighter/ bomber role.

The Zerstorer’s fame was really strengthened later in the war when it was adapted to the night fighter role, and here it shone.

The Bf 110 appears to have garnered more success with Eduard than the original did with the Luftwaffe, with this Limited Edition Bf110C-6 being the ninth incarnation of the type in the prolific Czech manufacturer’s 1/48th catalogue.

Eduard note this Limited Edition run is for only 1500 kits worldwide so is this clever marketing or a very useful package for Zerstorer fans?

FirstLook

Only a handful of airframes - around 12 - were converted to C-6 configuration, visually distinguished by the underfuselage 30mm cannon in its gondola.

The six part Brassin set of the Mk 101 cannon and its gondola is simply a jewel. The detail in the cannon is state of the art and alone justifies the existence of this limited edition model.

The gun gondola conceals all of that beautiful detail of the Mk 101 cannon so a maintenance scene with the gondola removed seems a natural remedy.

Set that aside and the kit is essentially the standard Bf 110C kit, with the resin and PE additions to pretty it up. Brett Green in his review of the Bf 110C in 2007 affords a detailed study of the parts on offer http://www.hyperscale.com/2007/reviews/kits/eduard8201reviewbg_1.htm

The full instructions for this Bf 110C-6 Limited Edition kit are available for free download on Eduard’s website at http://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/1182.pdf which enables prospective buyers to “taste” the assembly process.

The kit comes with two decal options

  • Erpr.Gr.210, flown by Lt Erich Beudel / Ogfw Heinrich Diemer, Calais-Marck Air Base, France, Summer, 1940 with a RLM 70/ 71/ 65 scheme.

  • NJG1, Venlo Air Base, the Netherlands, February, 1942 in an overall black scheme. Note the kit comes with alternate fuselage parts to enable either option to be made.

As always the decal quality is excellent and commendably thin. A sheet of Bf110 stencils is included and the main sheet also includes swastikas for those who crave historical accuracy.

The instruction book is a 20 page full colour affair on high quality paper with detailed visual guides to show placement of the comprehensive full colour PE set.

Those intimidated by masking will applaud the supplied kabuki tape material with pre-cut masks.

Given that this is essentially a re-boxed Bf 110C kit with extra frills to do a C-6 variant, then there’s not a lot more to be added to existing reviews of the base kit. Eduard’s Bf 110 series has been rightly applauded for lifting the type into the 21st Century as the definitive 1/48th Bf 110 model series.

Conclusion

Eduard’s kits are re-defining the quality that discerning modellers have come to expect and the surface detail of the parts for the Bf 110C-6 Limited Edition is everything you could hope for.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample.
