The Battle for Malta represents a most interesting campaign to model, with a wide variety of subjects to cover. Many of these subjects are available as very good quality modern kits in 1/72-scale. This sheet focuses on a few Axis types, and is possibly a little Bf 109 heavy for commercial reasons; with Italian types less represented for due to the same considerations. Personally, I would like to have seen one or two Italian bomber types represented in place of a couple of the Bf 109s.
The sheet is promoted as being “Now corrected and re-printed”, although what has changed from the original release I cannot say.
The subjects covered are:
-
Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7 White 12 7/JG26 Oblt Joachim Muncheberg;
-
Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2 White 2 III/JG53 Lt Hermann Neuhoff;
-
Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 White 3 10(Jabo)/JG53 Uffz Felix Sauer;
-
Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 White <- JG3 Hptm Karl-Heinz Krahl Gruppencommander;
-
Junkers Ju 87R 'Stuka' - S7+KP 6 Staffel, II Gruppe,StG3;
-
Messerschmitt Bf 110D 3U+KT 9/ZG 26;
-
Junkers Ju 88A-4 LJ+FN 5/LG 1;
-
Macchi C.202 CL III 152 Gruppo Caccia Terreste; and
-
Macchi C.200 Saetta 81-14 83 Squadrigilia 6 Gruppo.
The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual A5 window envelope. The instructions are nicely produced in colour and clearly indicate markings placement. Brief notes regarding unit, pilot and other points of interest are provided for each subject. Paint references use RLM paint codes and names for the German aircraft, and not surprisingly are cross-referenced to Xtracolour and Xtracrylix paint codes. The Italian aircraft colours are described using their Italian names, but no paint codes are provided for these. The decals look to be superbly printed and with excellent colour density.
This is a very nicely produced decal set of some attractive and interesting schemes.
Recommended.
