Advantages:

Extensive markings options if you like green US Army Chinooks, stencils supplied in both yellow and black.

Disadvantages:

Trying to choose which one to use. Lack of information about which coloured stencils to use on each airframe.

Conclusion:

A high quality and extensive set of markings across a broad era. Recommended.

I’d not heard of Printscale Decals until I received these decals to review. A quick browse of their website and it turns out that Printscale have a growing catalogue of contemporary and older aviation and armour subjects in all of the major scales.

If first impressions are anything to go by, I am impressed. The decals come in an A5 zip lock bag with 2 double sided colour A4 sheets showing the marking options and the stencil placement guide. Small thumbnails of the artwork that adorn some of the airframes are shown where relevant. The sheet contains 15 options across the entire service life of the Chinook.

The quality of the decals looks superb with barely visible carrier film. Colour density is good and registration looks spot on. The art work for each aircraft in particular looks amazing. There’s no sign of bleed or blurring of the images. Stencils are legible and are provided in both black and yellow however no information is provided on what colour should be sued with each airframe. I suggest checking your references before commencing.

 

 

The decal options supplied are:

  2. CH-47D No.71-20955 "Widow Maker" 

  3. CH-47D No.90-00217 

  4. CH-47 No. 67-18452 "Boony Bus'

  5. CH-47 No.67-18440 - "The Virgin Hunter". 

  6. Boeing build number B-206, was a CH-47A helicopter. The U.S. Army acceptance date was 29 June 1966. No.66-00074 

  7. CH-47A “WILD THANG” of th 178th MHC, American Division, at Chu Lai during July of 1970.

  8. Marilyn Monroe 89-00143 Boeing CH-47D Chinook 158th Aviation Company US Army Aviation 2011

  9. CH-47 90-00205 while undergoing maintenance by contract personnel (Army Fleet Service [AFS]) at Knox Army (KFHK) heliport, Fort Rucker, Alabama. The aircraft was named after "Tonka", one of Rodney Thomas's Bull dogs back home. The birds represent the number of bird strikes that required structural repairs. While named "Tonka", 90-00205 was assigned to Company B - "Freight Train", 5th Battalion, 159 Aviation Regiment, Fort Eustis, Virgina, circa 2004. 

  10. CH-47D 87-00109 was crewed by SSG Greg Riss

  11. CH-47D 90-00211, Boeing D model kit number M3363, was a CH-47D helicopter. The U.S. Army acceptance date was 19 September 1991. As of 22 June 1998, 90-00211 had accumulated 885.4 D model hours and 3,003.0 total aircraft hours. 90-00211 was a conversion from the original C model Chinook 70-15021. On 17 July 1990, 90-00211 was inducted into the D model program, converted, and initially assigned to Company A - "Hook-ers", 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, United States Army Reserve, located in the State of Washington. Shortly after the "War on Terrorism" was declared, 90-00211 was deployed to the Middle East Theater in support of Operation Iraqi Liberation. As of 1 January 2002, this aircraft was 30.3 years old. As of January 2004, the last known location of 90-00211 was in Iraq, assigned to the Company A, 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment. Aircraft status: Flyable.

C o n c l u s i o n

 

I don’t think I’ve seen such an extensive number of options on any decal sheet for any subject…ever.

The large timeframe makes it even better. Just be sure to check your references regarding the stencils and which colour to use.

I definitely recommended these decals for your next 1/72 scale Chinook.
