Here is my 1/48 scale MustHave Models North American F-86K, kit no MH148002
This is the first time I have built a MustHave Models kit although I have built the original Revell/Monogram F-86D Sabre kit which makes up 90 % of this kit.
I really wanted to do a West German F-86K but the kit has the original F-86D wing included whereas the West German F-86K has the larger F40 wings retrofitted. So before everyone points out the wings are incorrect, “they are” and I accept this as a compromise. I spend a long time considering the work to make an F40 wing and integrate it with the fuselage but in the end it was too much work. So I cheated a bit, and engraved an outer aileron edge line to make the wings look like they were extended and I will not sit it beside my F-86D. It is difficult to tell that the wing is not an F40 wing without a comparison reference.
The original Revell/Monogram kit was a superb kit when initially released and it went together quite well.
The new F-86K fuselage halves provided by MustHave Models integrate very nicely with the original kit parts and have had all the panel detail corrected for the F-86K across the entire fuselage including the oversized rudder trim tab in the original Revell/Monogram kit.
The camouflage scheme and markings came are from a reference in the AirDoc publication. The paint is from the Xtra Color range and the markings are from a mix of German F-86 Mk 5/6 decal sheets. The tail emblem came from a German F-104 decals sheet which just happened to be the correct size and marking detail.
Overall I am happy with the finished product even though the wings are not the correct F40 wing.
Thanks to MustHave Models for the review sample.
