Yufei Mao is a talented modeller from China whose on-line builds of Russian and Chinese subjects have been very inspirational. If you have not seen examples of his work then perhaps the most recent has been an excellent 1/72 Su-27P build that has been published right here on Hyperscale. A key element of these builds has been the inclusion of some excellent scratch built accessories and corrections that he has now decided to market under the Fairy Hobby Banner.
First off is FRH72001.
This is titled 1/72 Modern Russian Pilot (Standing Pose). This figure is posed with legs slightly astride with hands on hips. He is wearing full flying clothing and safety equipment, with oxygen mask dangling. The figure scales out at about 5 Feet 8 Inches high, which is a good height for a male person and well within the height range for a 1/72 scale model. The flying clothing is well depicted with the ZSh-7 helmet and KM-35 mask being particularly well defined, as are the facial features on the figure itself.
Second is FRH48001, which depicts a Chinese pilot in the early 1960’s – appropriate for a MiG-17 or J-6 type aircraft.
Posed with one leg raised to mount a boarding ladder, the figure is well animated and realistic. The figure itself scales out to about five feet six inches in height, which is probably appropriate for the era and subject. This pilot is wearing a Chinese indigenous Type 59 flying helmet, effectively an early Soviet Shl-50 leather helmet with added crown pad and protection. He is also wearing a Type 59 flying ensemble including suit and life preserver. Like the previous 1/72 scale figure this one is crisply moulded and well defined and should come up well under paint.
The only drawback worth noting is that due to being equipped with the unique Chinese Type 59 ensemble the figure will be limited somewhat in application without some modification.
These new figures have great potential for modellers of Chinese or Soviet/Russian aircraft. Each of the figures is well designed, sculpted and cast and seems well thought through. The poses are dynamic and natural and will add impact to a model or diorama to which they are applied. I for one look forward to future products from this range as they are released.
Thanks to Fairy Hobby for the samples.
