Description

I seemed to have accumulated a small mountain of accessories and detail parts for Revell's 1/32 scale Heinkel He 162 A-2, so it seemed logical that I should build the model for my forthcoming Osprey Luftwaffe Jet and Rocket Aircraft Masterclass book.

Revell's big Volkjager is quite straightforward to build but well detailed, with nicely fitted out wheel wells, one cannon bay and a busy cockpit. However, I could not resist using some of the after-market upgrades that I had in the stash.

In the end, I wound up fitting the full Aires update for the cockpit and wheel wells, mated with the colour photo-etch from CMK's detail set. The Aires resin is just spectacular, with deep detail cast onto the cockpit sidewalls incuding wiring and actuators.

If anything, the main wheel well is even better detailed. The jumble of springs, struts and structural features respond very well to painting and weathering.

Scale Aircraft Conversions' white metal landing gear was also used.

The kit's plastic DF loop was cut off the base and replaced with a staple from a Tamiya plastic bag bent to shape.

Paints are Gunze-Sangyo acrylics except for the red and black, which were decanted from Tamiya spray cans. The decals are from the beautiful but sadly out-of-production Fritz Decals sheet, released back in 2005 (my, doesn't time fly).

Weathering followed the lead of reference photos, which showed a fairly heavy buildup of soot around the gun troughs and the edges of the cannon bay doors.

A few photos of the model are included here.

More information will be available closer to the book's release.
