Background

The Luftwaffe’s Spanner Anlage was essentially an infra-red spotlight or emitter with a receiver and display unit for the pilot. It was used on a few Bf 110, Do 17 and Do 215 night-fighters. It had only very limited effectiveness and no doubt increased drag quite a bit. The development of effective airborne interception radar by the Germans led to the system being abandoned.

Owl Decals is probably best known to modellers for their range of decals and detail accessories, with a particular emphasis on Luftwaffe night fighter subjects.

This conversion set is in keeping with this emphasis and will please those who want an unusual night fighter variant of their 1/32 Bf 110.

The conversion comes in a clear blister pack containing the resin and vac-form parts in a plastic bag. The decals are enclosed within the instructions that slide into the grooved edges of the blister pack.

The instructions are very clearly printed and cover the simple aspects of assembly. English instructions are provided where required. The small painting and markings guide uses RLM codes for paint colours. The only omission I feel should be mentioned is that there is no information on the colour the face of the infra-red searchlight.

The resin parts are cast by CMR and reflect the high standards that this company is well known for. The vac-from clear searchlight cover is well moulded (the photo here doesn’t do it justice), and seems to be quite thick acetate.  Decals for one aircraft are provided, and these look to be produced to a very high standard as would be expected of Owl Decals.

Although not reviewed here, Owl Resin offer this same conversion set in 1/72 and 1/48 scales as well.

Conclusion

This a simple but very well executed conversion set, and should appeal to those who want their Bf 110 night-fighter to be that little bit different.

Recommended.
