FirstLook

Eduard's latest addition to their Wurger family is a Dual Combo Fw 190 A Nachtjager. Enough parts are incuded for two full kits.

In common with their previous Fw 190 kits, this new Dual Combo Nachtjager the quality of injection moulded parts, detail and markings are state-of-the-art. Surface detail second to none, being restrained and crisp with very subtle lines of recessed rivets supplementing panel lines.

Rather than repeat the entire description of the kit, let's focus on the new parts. For a detailed examination of the remaining parts, check out our original review of Eduard's 1/48 scle Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8.

For the first time, the parts included in this single box will allow the modeller to build any of the major Fw 190 A variants. Alternative fuselage parts (two sets of halves) and lower wings (four different sets) are supplied to build a Fw 190 A-5, A-6, A-7 or A-8.

One new plastic sprue is supplied. This contains injection moulded radar arrays plus glare shields for the exhausts.

Two full sets of clear parts include the armoured glass sections for the A-8/R2 as well - more handy parts for the spares box!

The colour photo-etched parts for both aircraft are included on one fret.

The additional photo-etched fret provides more radar and aerials.

Another nice touch is the inclusion of a Wilde Sau lapel pin, which should be an interesting conversation piece at your next dinner party!

Markings are included for six interesting and varied Fw 190 night fighters:

  • A-5 10./NJG 3 'Nachtjagdkommando 190', Aalborg-West, Denmark, Winter, 1944

  • A-6 W.Nr.550445, Major Hajo Hermann, Stab/JG Herrmann, Bonn-Hangelar, August, 1943

  • A-6/R-11 'Neptun' II./JG 300, Lobnitz, Fall, 1943

  • A-7/R-11 'Neptun' Lt. Klaus Bretschneider, 6./JG 300, Rheine, March, 1944

  • A-8/R11 'Neptun' Fhj. Ofw. Gunter Migge, 1./NJGr. 10, Werneuchen, 1944

  • Oberst Walter Grabmann, Jagdfliegerführer Holland & 3. Jagddivision, 1943-1944

Of course, with the terrific variety of parts in the box, you could build almost any Fw 190 A-5 to A-8 variant, night fighter or otherwise, simply by using after-market decals.

Conclusion

Eduard's 1/48 scale Fw 190 A Nachtjager Dual Combo is great value. For just under the price of two Wurger kits, you will have all the parts needed to build two full kits as any of the major Fw 190 A variants, including of course the night fighters. The lapel pin is a fun touch too.

Keep in mind, though, that this is not a model that will fall together by itself, so you will be advised to allocate plenty of time and treat it with the respect that it deserves. If you have already assembled a few kits, however, you should not have any trouble.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample
