Construction

Here is Alley Cat Models' Kit No ACRK48-01, their 1/48 scale GAF Jindivik.

When I completed the in box review for this kit I commented on how superb the castings were but I did not appreciated the excellence of the engineering until I had finished assembling the kit.  Once the parts are cut from the casting blocks and cleaned up the parts fit perfectly.

The only filler needed was to deal with a few air bubbles along the upper fuselage where the mould seam line was evident.

The build was very simple including the minor amount of folding required for the etched metal parts.

Painting and Markings

I could find no flaws to comment on with this kit other than those of my own doing.  These were to do with obtaining the correct colours to paint the kit, as most of those mentioned in the kit instructions were unavailable to me without a long wait for international postage.

After several efforts using readily available paint matches and numerous stripping back of the kit due to paint issues I managed to get an acceptable finish using Lifecolour acrylic paints (which I hope to never ever use again).

Trolley, Finishing Touches and Markings

The launch trolley is a complete work of art as an almost single piece moulding that requires very little work.  This is where my only gripe with the kit comes into play.  To display the kit on the trolley you need to put some blutac under the nose wheel of the trolley as the weight of the solid Jindivik casting makes it a definite tail sitter that I can see no other solution for.

I completed the kit as N11-742, Jindivik Mk. 203B named “Vic Harvey” that was used by the RAN in 1998.  This aircraft is finished in Rocket Red and Saturn Yellow florescent paint.  This aircraft flew the last ever Jindivik flight in Australia on 26th June 1998.

The decals are crisp, accurate in colour and in register.  They are very thin and conform well to the surface detail.

Recommended for modellers with some experience due to the multi media nature of this kit.
