Here is my SPAD XIII flown by Lt. Reed Chambers built 100% from scratch. What started as a 1/48 scale plane quickly turned out into a 1/35 scale model instead.
I worked my way through some plans I had for the plane structure. I covered the with thin plastic then applied some putty and melted sprue so i could get the shape of the airframe.
After that I levelled the surface with some putty and sanded it until smooth. I then added rigging cable wires to look like the struture after the fabric was applied.
It is a true multimedia kit because I used everything i could get my hand on - plastic, wires, wood, beer cans, everything I had in my house that i thought it would look okay. The Vickers guns are even made from barbecue sticks. The rigging was done with monofilament.
All the markings are painted through masks drawn by hand. It was not an easy job but in the end they looked more authentic.
The weathering was accomplished with oil paint over future and then wiped away.
The project tooked three months because it was a learning process.
